Course Description/Rationale/Overview: This course explores the meaning of being an informed citizen in a democratic society. Students will learn the elements that define democracy and the meaning of democratic citizenship within a local, national and global context. In addition, students will learn about the significance of social change, as well as explore decision-making processes in our society. Students will have the opportunity to explore beliefs and to share perspectives on social matters. Students will engage in critical and creative analyses concerning social issues.
Class Requirements: The textbook for this course is Canadian Civics. Students will using this book frequently, particularly early in the course and should bring it with them to each class. Students should also have a notebook and pen, or their laptop with them at each class. Photocopied material and videos will supplement the textbook in order to enrich certain topics or to explore other issues pertaining to the course. |
